Fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. What’s it all about? What is happening?
Initially, I thought that the earth (a living, breathing organism) is angry and all of these disasters are her expression of that anger. However, after talking with one of my mentors, her take is that the earth is reflecting the anger people are feeling. Either way, it’s about anger.
And there seems to be a lot of it these days. If you personally aren’t feeling the anger, just look around at all the people disagreeing about politics, reproduction rights, immigration, and more.
Many people assume that whatever they are thinking is the one and only “right way” and are angry if someone disagrees. Whatever happened to listening and discussing? What happened to allowing people to have an opinion different than someone else’s?
What would it take to move to allow people to have different opinions? What would it take to realize that a difference of opinion is just a point of view?
The solution? Love. The way to deal with anger is love.
I did this when my daughter was 14 years old. She was very angry at me, threatening to steal my car (even though she had no clue how to drive). I know she was just expressing her anger and wouldn’t really do anything. But I couldn’t think of how to dissipate the anger, so I hugged her and held her. I was shocked when she completely melted in my arms. Love dissolves anger.
There are two commandments…
- Love God
- Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
It’s hard to love God when “bad” things are happening. But love is love. It is unconditional. You love your kids even if you don’t always like what they are doing. The same is true about loving God.
The second, most people interpret as giving your neighbor love. But they miss the love yourself part, which actually has to happen before you love your neighbor. In other words, you cannot love your neighbor MORE than you love yourself. You can’t give what you don’t have.
So, as the earth continues to express itself, please love your family, your neighbors, even the stranger on the street. Hug often. Smile more. Pray for love. Be grateful for everything you do have. Feel the love build in your chest and radiate out to everyone around you. Then please send that love into the earth. Together we can make a difference. If everybody does it, things will shift.
